Pittsburgh thanks you for all your support
"Heard about Pittsburgh, P. A.?"
Life During Wartime by Talking Heads
I live in Squirrel Hill, just a five-minute walk from the Tree of Life synagogue. Our diverse multi-ethnic community is the quintessence of calm. If an anti-Semitic hate monger can shatter peace here, unspeakable violence can visit any town in America.
We would like to thank the countless people who have called with their love and support. It is greatly and warmly appreciated. There is so much good in the world. Yet one touch of evil has shaken so many lives.
Infinite thanks to the first responders, whose sirens we heard minutes after the shooting began. Squirrel Hill's police station is just around the corner. Our police ran toward the bullets to protect us; civilians usually run the other way. Their innate heroism prevented further tragedy.
"We just want to know what you need," offered the Pittsburgh Islamic Center. "If it's people outside your next service protecting you, let us know. We'll be there." The Muslim community has raised over $200,000 for the victims' families.
Only love can conquer hate, only tolerance can defeat terror. One hate-filled killer murdered eleven Jews at prayer. Millions of caring people have since poured out their love and kindness. Thank you.
