State of Maryland v Calvin Odera

Computer unmixes DNA in sexual assault case

Crime A preteen girl was sexually assaulted. Calvin Odera was arrested and charged with the crime.
Evidence A lubricant bottle was recovered from Odera’s bathroom.
DNA The Montgomery County Police Crime Laboratory produced the DNA data from the evidence.
Match The lab was unable to interpret the data. The DNA mixture evidence was too complex for their interpretation methods.
TrueAllele On the same DNA data, the computer’s match statistic connecting the lubricant bottle with the girl was 4.88 nonillion.
Cybergenetics    On October 30, 2019, TrueAllele analyst William Allan testified at the Rockville trial about the computer DNA match statistic.
Outcome Later that evening, the jury found Odera guilty on all counts.
