Abstract
Most DNA evidence is a mixture of two or more people. These mixtures produce complex data patterns that crime labs simplify for human analysis. The manipulated data gives incorrect or inconclusive match statistics. But courts require match statistics for DNA evidence.
Modern computers can separate complex data into genetic components. They find accurate and objective match statistics that connect crime scenes to culprits. A Pittsburgh double homicide case shows how better science yields better justice. By solving minor crime, computers help prevent major crime.
